MS Dhoni is the most successful captain in Indian cricket. He captained India from 2007 to 2017 in ODI and T20I and from 2008 to 2014 in Test cricket. He captained India in the most number of international matches which is the record itself. Not only that, under his leadership India won all the possible trophies in international cricket.
Under the captainship of Dhoni India won 2007 T20 World Cup, hosted in South Africa. It was Dhoni who brought the cricket World Cup to India after 28 long years in 2011. Dhoni was also named man of the match in the final against Sri Lanka where he led the team from a critical condition and scored a valuable 91 of just 79 balls. He also led the team to win the Champions trophy in 2013 and also the Asia Cup twice in 2010 and 2016. India is yet to find his replacement as a wicket-keeper, finisher and captain cool. His extra capability is the DRS (Decision review System) which is often termed as “Dhoni Review System”.
In IPL Dhoni captained Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ten times out of which CSK on the title five times in the following years – 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. CSK has also won two champions league T20 under his captainship. Dhoni was the first wicket keeper to score over 5000 IPL runs.
MS Dhoni played his last test series against Australia in Melbourne. He announced his retirement from test cricket in 2015. He also handed over the captaincy of limited over cricket to Virat Kohli in January 2017. Dhoni’s last ODI match was the world cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand where he got run out by direct throw of Martin Guptill. Amid the pandemic, Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on 15th August, 2020.
Now in the ongoing IPL 2024 Dhoni is in tremendous form. In this tournament he played the actual role of finisher where in the seven matches his scored 87 runs with an astonishing strike rate of 257.
